Preventing child abuse is the concern of everyone in a position to help.
The education service does not constitute an investigation or intervention agency, but does have a very important role to play at the recognition and referral stage. All staff in the education service – including all staff employed in schools – have a legal responsibility to notify a designated protection officer if they suspect that a child has been abused or is at risk of abuse.
Suspected cases will be reported by the Child Protection Officer to Social Services or the Police as appropriate and in accordance with agreed procedures. Parents will be informed by the appropriate authority but not by the school.
